Themes, motifs and symbols in Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray The only published novel by Oscar Wilde, which appeared in Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine in 1890, was seen as immoral and scandalous, so the editors of the magazine censored about five hundred words without Wilde’s knowledge. Even with that, the novel was not received very well. Disappointed with this, Wilde revised his novel, added a preface, where he explains his philosophy of art, and six new chapters. Since Wilde was devoted to aestheticism, he believed that art had no purpose, nor moral nor political, because art is beautiful and therefore has worth. His attitude was revolutionary, since Victorian England believed that art could be used for social education and†¦show more content†¦For a period of time, Dorian has only one goal in life, and lives according to it, not paying attention to his conscience, and that goal is only pleasure. On the other hand, Dorian’s portrait represents his conscience and haunts him. The portrait knows his crimes, it rem inds Dorian of the cruelty he has shown towards Sybil Vane, and the murder of Basil Hallward. Another motif which plays a large role in Oscar Wilde’s novel is the homoerotic bond between men. Basil’s portrait of Dorian develops from his adoration of Dorian’s beauty, and Lord Henry has a strong desire to seduce Dorian. This relationship between men represents aesthetic values that Wilde was fighting for, because it brought him back to antique times, when youth and beauty was appreciated most, and it was fundamental in society and often expressed through a relationship between two men. Since Wilde was a homosexual himself, living in an intolerant society, fighting for this philosophy was his way of justifying his lifestyle. He thought homosexuality was a sign of refined culture and not a sin. He thought that a relationship between an elder and a younger man resembled the tradition of Plato, Michelangelo and Shakespeare. Teaching Young Children And Becoming A Kindergarten Teacher

Growing up, I always had aspirations of becoming a kindergarten teacher. Teaching young children and wanting to make a difference by having a positive influence on their early developmental years, were just a few reasons that a kindergarten classroom had the potential to be a life changer type of career. Teachers play an important role in fostering the intellectual and social development of children during their formative years. As I grew older and began my collegiate career, my path took a different direction. As part of my project, I had the opportunity to interview an amazing kindergarten teacher, Ms. Melton. This is her 8th year as a school teacher and she is one of the four African American lead teachers at the rural school she works at. Ms. Melton and I share a common desire to work with young children. She knew at an early age that she wanted to be a kindergarten teacher, and she is a perfect fit with her students. It’s clear that her bubbly personality and infectious excitement for learning and fun make her a wonderful asset to the school system and to the kindergarten hall. In addition to my interview, I had the opportunity to observe her classroom and witness first hand that she has a desire to be a teacher and a passion for her students. In-formal In formal communication it’s hard to use with different social groups because everyone is different and everyone in groups or family and friends are using different type of method to communicate which is in formal communication. Sometimes people may do not understand each other when they are using in formal communication. In a health and social care setting in-formal communication can be difficult to use. This is because in a care home everyone is different and they come from different backgrounds. If there family or friends came to visit them in the care home in-formal communication would be used more as they are familiar with them. (Collins Education, 2012). One-to one For me it’s the same as face to face which means, person is talking to another person. Some of the people for example me I prefer one to one communication because I feel more relaxed and no nervous also I can look to someone eyes which shows the concentration and respect and listen carful also people may be friendly by smiling and start the nice conversation which may start from interact each other. In a health and social care setting one-to-one communication is used when the nurse needs to speak to the patient. It will be just the nurse and patient talking and if the patient needs to ask any questions they will feel comfortable as it is just them and the nurse. When other people are around the patient may not feel as comfortable because they do not want other people finding out about their needs. (Collins Education, 2012). Text messaging Most of the people are using text messaging to communicate specially teenagers; this is the quickest way to communicate with another person. However there are some disadvantages about text messaging which is the cost if people do not have a free text they need to control the balance, the second example is a network not always you can get a text and another example is people who are receiving a text it may do not understand someone feeling. In a health and social care setting text messaging may be used when the carers need to communicate with each other. This would be easier for them to text each other instead of walking around the building trying to find the person they want to give a quick message to. (Collins Education, 2012). Music and Drama Music and Drama is used in communication, some people may prefer to show the expression by acting or writing the song. The music communicate most with teenagers, for boys they mostly like to hear and communicate with a rap music and girls are mostly listen to the love songs when they have bad days. However the classic music is making the relaxed conversation. In a health and social care setting music and drama may be used if they do not want to communicate formally. This would be a fun way to communicate with some of the patients as it is something different. Collins Education, 2012). Speech People who came from a different location or form a different background have a own words which they are used to use or have a different accent. Most of the teenagers are using the slang which most of the adult are don’t understanding or some of the slang can everyone understand, However these days most of the words which we are using are not even in a dictionary. In a heal th and social care setting speech is very important because you need to be able to communicate with each other effectively. So your speech should be clear and understandable. Language Many people are grown with one language which may think this is the only way to communicate like me, however people as me in life time may start using the another language to communicate which is not the easiest way because some people may feel shy to talk or different reasons, most people who was born and learned with the first language are more prefer to communicate with the first language then the second. Now we can see that more people are growing up with multilingual communication which is good because they may learn several languages from birth. In a health and social care setting language is also important because many people may not speak the same language as you. You need to make sure your language is professional in a health and social care setting so everyone can understand you. (Collins Education, 2012). Non-verbal Non-verbal means communication without saying any words. For example when people are using a text communication they are using also no verbal communication because they do not says any words. Also when people are using body language and facial expression they are using a non-verbal communication. In a health and social care setting non-verbal communication is important because some people may not be able to speak or see. Creative writing: My Dog Essay Over the past several months, my family and I noticed that Molly, our 12-year-old dog, had progressively become more torpid about the house and outside. At first, we thought something was wrong. We believed that she had come down with some sort of sickness. After a while, we came to our senses and deduced that it was probably just old age. Then, she stopped eating. Again, our natural intuition told us wrong, as we figured that it was just a stomach bug, nothing deleterious. Before this time, I had always felt that Molly was a young, vivacious, cheerful, and gregarious member of our family. I began to feel that she was mortal just like the all of us, as her degradation continued. We took her to the vet for an inspection, still supposing it was just a bug, or she was not feeling well, such that this would not be chronic, but only fleeting. I was busy the next several days while my mom had checked her into the vet, and soon became relaxed as I forgot about Molly over the next several days. Then, one night, it all changed. As I was passing through the house with my girlfriend, as on any other normal, carefree, Friday night of the summer, my mom stopped us both and told us we should sit down. I almost instantly knew the topic of conversation would be my beloved younger sister. I could tell by the way that my mom drew in her breath before even uttering a word that our little girl was more than just sick. I had always wondered what life would be like without her. I would have to shove that thought away, it was so painful at the time. Some people may say that dogs are just pets, and nothing more. Well, in our family, she had been a part of us since we moved into this house almost twelve years ago. Very few memories of mine can I recall, in which I cannot recall having her at the time. Our special one, my parents third child, had a kidney disorder, which would give a shelf life to her. The vet said that she might last another year, but she needed emergency treatment right now. Although I knew what my mom had said before she said it, I was appalled at hearing the actual words come out of her mouth. Molly spent another several days in the pet hospital, having IVs inserted into her, to cleanse her blood. She came back the next day, with life in her, as I had not seen in years. She jumped and played as if it were the first day we had her again. However, this magical fountain of youth, was short-lived. She morphed before our eyes over the next 3 days back into Old Molly, as if a spell had worn its time, as if the clock struck midnight, and the carriage reverted into the pumpkin. Just even a few days ago, as I walked into the den, Molly growled at me as if I was a stranger, from across the living room. My guess was that her eyesight had been debilitated so much that she could not even tell who I was, until I spoke. My only hope for her, or more for me, is that she will last another ten or eleven months, so that I can get to college before she passes on, as I know that death is now inevitable for her. I used to hope that she would be the old lethargic dog at Grandmas house. That someday that my children would pet, and ask about the days when she would run about the yard, and run away but always ending up on the front porch. By her example, I now realize the mortality of us all, not just pets.
