Themes, motifs and symbols in Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray The only published novel by Oscar Wilde, which appeared in Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine in 1890, was seen as immoral and scandalous, so the editors of the magazine censored about five hundred words without Wilde’s knowledge. Even with that, the novel was not received very well. Disappointed with this, Wilde revised his novel, added a preface, where he explains his philosophy of art, and six new chapters. Since Wilde was devoted to aestheticism, he believed that art had no purpose, nor moral nor political, because art is beautiful and therefore has worth. On the other hand, Dorian’s portrait represents his conscience and haunts him. Another motif which plays a large role in Oscar Wilde’s novel is the homoerotic bond between men. Basil’s portrait of Dorian develops from his adoration of Dorian’s beauty, and Lord Henry has a strong desire to seduce Dorian. This relationship between men represents aesthetic values that Wilde was fighting for, because it brought him back to antique times, when youth and beauty was appreciated most, and it was fundamental in society and often expressed through a relationship between two men. Since Wilde was a homosexual himself, living in an intolerant society, fighting for this philosophy was his way of justifying his lifestyle. Growing up, I always had aspirations of becoming a kindergarten teacher. Teaching young children and wanting to make a difference by having a positive influence on their early developmental years, were just a few reasons that a kindergarten classroom had the potential to be a life changer type of career. Creative writing: My Dog Essay Over the past several months, my family and I noticed that Molly, our 12-year-old dog, had progressively become more torpid about the house and outside. At first, we thought something was wrong. We believed that she had come down with some sort of sickness. After a while, we came to our senses and deduced that it was probably just old age. Then, she stopped eating. Again, our natural intuition told us wrong, as we figured that it was just a stomach bug, nothing deleterious. Before this time, I had always felt that Molly was a young, vivacious, cheerful, and gregarious member of our family. I began to feel that she was mortal just like the all of us, as her degradation continued. We took her to the vet for an inspection, still supposing it was just a bug, or she was not feeling well, such that this would not be chronic, but only fleeting. I was busy the next several days while my mom had checked her into the vet, and soon became relaxed as I forgot about Molly over the next several days. Then, one night, it all changed. As I was passing through the house with my girlfriend, as on any other normal, carefree, Friday night of the summer, my mom stopped us both and told us we should sit down. I almost instantly knew the topic of conversation would be my beloved younger sister. I could tell by the way that my mom drew in her breath before even uttering a word that our little girl was more than just sick. I had always wondered what life would be like without her. I would have to shove that thought away, it was so painful at the time. Some people may say that dogs are just pets, and nothing more. Well, in our family, she had been a part of us since we moved into this house almost twelve years ago. Very few memories of mine can I recall, in which I cannot recall having her at the time. Our special one, my parents third child, had a kidney disorder, which would give a shelf life to her. The vet said that she might last another year, but she needed emergency treatment right now. Although I knew what my mom had said before she said it, I was appalled at hearing the actual words come out of her mouth. Molly spent another several days in the pet hospital, having IVs inserted into her, to cleanse her blood. She came back the next day, with life in her, as I had not seen in years. She jumped and played as if it were the first day we had her again. However, this magical fountain of youth, was short-lived. She morphed before our eyes over the next 3 days back into Old Molly, as if a spell had worn its time, as if the clock struck midnight, and the carriage reverted into the pumpkin. Just even a few days ago, as I walked into the den, Molly growled at me as if I was a stranger, from across the living room. My guess was that her eyesight had been debilitated so much that she could not even tell who I was, until I spoke. My only hope for her, or more for me, is that she will last another ten or eleven months, so that I can get to college before she passes on, as I know that death is now inevitable for her. I used to hope that she would be the old lethargic dog at Grandmas house. That someday that my children would pet, and ask about the days when she would run about the yard, and run away but always ending up on the front porch. By her example, I now realize the mortality of us all, not just pets.

Jacksons stubborn skepticism about banks escalated into a highly personal battle between the president of the United States and the president of the bank, Nicholas Biddle. The conflict over the bank became an issue in the presidential election of 1832, in which Jackson defeated Henry Clay. Following his reelection, Jackson sought to destroy the bank and engaged in controversial tactics which included firing treasury secretaries opposed to his grudge against the bank.   The Bank War created conflicts which resonated for years. And the heated controversy created by Jackson came at a very bad time for the country. Economic problems which reverberated through the economy eventually led to major depression in the Panic of 1837 (which occurred during the term of Jacksons successor, Martin Van Buren). The Growth of Democracy In 1850, Britain was an undemocratic country. At this time the electoral system divided Boroughs and Counties. Voting qualifications were different in boroughs and constituencies. The vote was only given to men over the age of 21 providing their property was valued at  £10 or more, or land was more than  £2 per year in rent. Seats were distributed unequally and traditional ruling families usually formed the Cabinet. Furthermore, bribery and corruption were widespread and only the minority of the population were entitled to vote. At this time there was no form of a basic education for the population masses and there was still a lot of power lying within the House Of Lords and not with elected officials. A certain degree of money was necessary to stand for election because this was not a paying job, which, as a result stopped vast numbers of people standing for election because the did not have the finances to support themselves. Nor were they able to afford to stand for election a s due to bribery and corruption, the poor stood no chance of winning as they did not have the money to provide voters with what they wanted in return for their support. For democracy, there needed to be regular elections and although at this time elections were every seven years, this was not often enough. However between 1850 and 1918, progress was made towards Britain becoming a democracy. Now there was better communication and education increasing political interest and this influenced people in trade, industry and finance. Economic changes made people better off and left them wanting to take part in politics, and be represented in parliament. This general desire for the widening of the franchise led to pressure groups forming in 1864. The Extension of the Franchise was helped by the Second Reform Bill passed in 1867. In this act, all householders who paid rates with 12 months residence and all  £10 a year lodgers with one years residence in the Boroughs were given the Franchise. In the Counties, the Franchise was given to those  £5 property owners and all those who occupied property with a rateable value of  £12 or in Scotland,  £14. This act changed the views of The Liberals and The Tories as they now saw that many people backed the idea of a widening of the franchise. Party opinions changed in order to woo voters in the towns, but these changed opinions alone helped in bringing Britain towards democracy as now these political parties wanted to give the people what they wanted and were, agreeing with the populations views on this issue.

In this view, like Nicaea creed and Apostle Creed, does not communicate with the true of scripture, but hear in scripture and summarize it with new and fresh language.On balance, diaconal view seems to be best able to honor the past and the evangelical impulse to measure everyth ing against Scripture. However, it still gives us question where the tradition communicate in which the scripture silence? In this vein, Martin Luther who denies dual source view also did not agree with single source view. In this view, faith and reason is not a relationship of contradictory, but two wings of a bird, where reason provides first, faith provides second. Faith is root and reason is stem. Reason by itself is fully inadequate, but helps deepen our understanding of Scripture, tradition and ourselves.Experience is to experience God in personal life. Thats why it is important that you mind some basic rules to keep the trip safe and enjoyable. Be Safe Dont get reckless on the bus. You dont want your day to end early, do you? Misbehavior on the bus can get you into trouble and ruin your day. You could end up sitting on the bus while the others enjoy the destination.Dont wander off. Listen carefully when the teacher gives instructions about sticking with the group or sticking with an assigned partner even when going to the restroom. Dont ever wander off on your own, or your trip could end badly. If you break this rule, you could end up with the teacher as your partner!Respect the chaperones. You should respect any chaperones and listen to them as you would your own teacher or parents. Chaperones have a big responsibility, watching after so many students at one time. They cant afford to give too much attention to one squeaky wheel, so they will probably be intolerant to distractions. Dont be disruptive.Respect nature. Some field trips will take you into contact with animals or plants. For your own safety, be mindful of potential dang ers and dont assume you can tug, pull, tease, or touch things safely.
